London, UK, 6th January 2012

Nikon today announces the launch of the D4, its new flagship D-SLR for photographers who are looking for the ultimate digital SLR camera to revolutionize photography.

Designed to push the limits and realize every shooting opportunity, this new professional FX-format camera brings new levels of image quality, speed and precision to both still photography and video.

Equipped with a 16.2-megapixel FX-format sensor, phenomenally high ISO and Nikon’s powerful EXPEED3 image processing engine, the new model offers uncompromised performance and unrivalled versatility in extreme lighting and environmental conditions.

“The introduction of the Nikon D4 sets a new benchmark for photography,” says Kentaro Kusakari, Product Planning Manager, Nikon UK. “We’re proud to be launching a new flagship model that exceeds the capabilities of its world renowned predecessor, the Nikon D3. This new camera has been designed for class leading professionals looking to push the limits of photography and improve their workflow. We’re confident that the Nikon D4 will help take them to the next level.”

Uncompromised Image quality—Exceptional speed
Engineered to deliver remarkable image integrity in the most diverse lighting conditions, the D4 offers blisteringly fast fps performance and sets a new benchmark in low-noise performance. The 16.2 megapixel FX-format (full-frame) CMOS sensor with fast channel readout delivers up to 11 fps—faster than any other Nikon DSLR camera.

Images of remarkable quality with low noise and wide dynamic range can be realized even at high ISO sensitivities thanks to the optimized noise reduction design and 14-bit A/D signal processing built into the sensor. The phenomenal ISO range sets a new benchmark of ISO12800 and extends the range one EV further to make ISO 100 a standard. For more challenging conditions, equivalent ISO 50 and ISO 204,800 sensitivities make the D4 the camera of choice for photographers who typically face extreme lighting challenges.

Super-charged EXPEED3 image processing engine
Thanks to Nikon’s next-generation EXPEED 3 image-processing engine, the D4 makes light work of multiple data-rich tasks without sacrificing the speed and quality that pros are accustomed to. High-speed 16-bit image processing follows the 14-bit A/D conversion to deliver submission-ready JPEGs straight out of the camera. Performance is never compromised, even when undertaking the most data-intensive tasks. Images boast faithful, well-saturated colour and natural depth. Even when shooting in dim lighting at high ISO sensitivities, the camera’s intelligent, performance-proven noise reduction lowers noise without degrading image sharpness.

   Faster total workflow speed
The D4’s speed runs across its entire workflow.

Newly developed Kevlar/carbon fiber-composite shutter unit: the new, highly durable shutter unit offers a standard life cycle rating of 400,000 releases, with a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 to 30s and flash synchronization at up to 1/250 sec. An intelligent self-diagnostic shutter monitor and a drive unit reduce the demand on power when the shutter is raised for extended periods during movie shooting.

Fast response: start-up is approx. 0.12 seconds*, release time lag is minimised to approx. 0.042 seconds** (equivalent to that of the D3S), with approx. up to 11 fps capability in FX-format and all crop modes.

Storage media: the D4 offers two card slots. One for high-speed CF (UDMA 7) cards and one for high-speed, high-capacity XQD card slot.

Connectivity: a powerful data communication and control system makes both wired and wireless LAN file transfer faster and easier than ever. Wireless LAN support is available via the compact, newly designed WT-5 Wireless Transmitter, which features HTTP and FTP connection modes and also allows for the simultaneous release of several cameras equipped with WT-5. HTTP mode has also been designed to work with iPhone screen resolutions. For the first time in a Nikon camera, a wired LAN connection is integrated into the camera body.

   Broadcast quality video
For professionals whose workflow demands video, the D4 offers all the flexibility required for a wide variety of movie applications. It’s large format movie shooting at its best, with a comprehensive variety of frame rates.

Frame rates: Full HD (1080p) movies can be recorded in 30p, 25p and 24p, with 60p, 50p, 30p and 25p options at 720p. Movie clips can be close to 30 minutes long (approx. 29.59 min).

Multi-area mode: Full HD (1080p) recording is possible in both FX and DX based formats as well as in native Full HD (1920×1080) crop.

High-fidelity audio control: responding to feedback from the industry, the D4 introduces new possibilities for D-SLR audio recording that enable your movies to sound as good as they look. Aside from the external stereo microphone input, an audio out for external headphones lets you fine tune audio in isolation.

   Always up to the job
Every millisecond can count, and the D4’s improved operability helps photographers respond quickly to changing situations.

Intuitive horizontal and vertical control: each orientation has identically laid-out controls, conveniently placed so that the camera may quickly become an extension of your hand whether you shoot in landscape or portrait.

Simplified AF and AF-area mode selection: now possible without taking your eye away from the viewfinder.

Precision 8-cm (3.2-in.), approx. 921k-dot, wide-viewing-angle LCD monitor with automatic brightness control. The monitor delivers bright, crisp image playback with a much wider colour reproduction capacity. LCD brightness is automatically adjusted according to the viewing environment and images can be magnified up to 46x during playback, which can be a big help for spot focus confirmation.

Glass prism optical viewfinder: offers approximately 100% frame coverage and 0.7x magnification (50mm f/1.4 lens at infinity, -1.0m-1). The high eyepoint design of Nikon’s viewfinders is renowned for minimizing visual fatigue when using the camera for extended periods of time.

Dual-axis electronic virtual horizon: offers accurate confirmation of level shooting by letting you check the LCD monitor, or the viewfinder, for both the camera’s position in relation to the horizontal plane and its pitch (forward or rear rotation).

Direct access to Picture Controls: via a dedicated button, rather than the menu. Picture Controls let you customize the look of your stills and videos by fine-tuning parameters such as sharpness, saturation, and hue.

   Complete control over workflow
The D4 is built for speed, but not for speed alone. Readiness and versatility go hand in hand with control options that can deliver a real advantage when time is of the essence.

Time-lapse movies: the D4 extends the popular time-lapse photography function by saving images as a movie file in the camera. With playback rates from 24 to 36,000 times faster than normal.

HDR (High Dynamic Range): shoots one overexposed and one underexposed frame in a single shutter release. The range can be widened by up to 3 EV for different looks, full of saturation and tonal gradation. The smoothness of the edge where the two exposures meet can be adjusted for a more natural look.

Refined colour temperature control: enables minute control over white balance. The monitor hue of live view and the resulting image’s white balance can be adjusted so that the two are aligned. Colour temperature can be manually set in 10-Kelvin increments, or in mired units.

Four image area options: you can choose from a variety of image crop modes, all visually masked in the viewfinder. 5:4 (30.0 x 24.0 mm), 1.2x (30.0 x 19.9 mm), and DX-format (23.4 x 15.6 mm).

In-camera editing: captured images and movies can be altered and edited in camera and on the fly if required. Retouch menus include an array of useful features such as NEF (RAW) processing, resize, distortion and perspective control just to name some of them. On top of that it has the ability to designate the start and end point of movie clips all at once, in order to save them more efficiently.

   Accessories
Compact WT-5 Wireless Transmitter (optional): attaches to the camera’s designated interface connector and is powered by the camera body. It features HTTP and FTP connection modes and allows for the simultaneous release of several cameras equipped with WT-5.

GP-1 GPS unit (optional): records location information such as latitude, longitude, altitude and time (UTC) as ‘geotags’ in the image data (Exif) and allows simultaneous operation together with the WT-5.

Compact Stereo Microphone ME-1 (optional): records clear sound while significantly reducing mechanical noise.

Nikon SB-910 (optional)—Unparalleled lighting performance: offers versatile i-TTL for on-camera or wireless flash control, refined operability and a powerful guide number of 34/112 (ISO 100, m/ft, STD, FX format, zoom 35mm). Menus and controls have been improved for more operational ease. Hard-type incandescent and fluorescent color filters are included, which can adjust your D4’s white balance instantly.

Capture NX 2 (optional)—Fast, powerful and creative image processing: to accommodate the imaging power of the D4, Capture NX 2 is faster than before and boasts full 64-bit compatibility.

Camera Control Pro 2 (optional)—Versatile remote camera controls: aside from controlling exposure mode, shutter speed, and aperture, this software now offers numerous improvements to make the D4’s live view operation exceptionally smooth. New creative controls include remote start and stop for movie shooting and the option to switch quickly between stills and movies in live view.

ViewNX 2 (supplied)—Browse, edit, share and more: bundled, all-in-one software implements an easy-to-use interface and an array of editing functions, including basic editing of RAW files and D-Movies. Seamlessly integrates with my Picturetown, Nikon’s photo sharing and storage service

*Based on CIPA Standards
**When used together with batteries other than EN-EL15

Everyone knows that looking through the viewfinder and part-depressing the shutter release is how you start the process of making pictures. That first touch performs a number of important tasks, the most obvious one being to activate the AF mechanism. Top-of-the-range Professional cameras like the Nikon D3s have an extra button which also performs this focussing task. It is known colloquially as the “back button” and to most pro sports, wildlife and action shooters it is the preferred way to get the subject in sharp focus – especially when taking multiple shots of fast moving subjects in a series of bursts. But why is it used and what are the advantages of using it? If your camera does not have this button, you might be thinking “this is of no interest to me…” but you would be wrong; it is highly likely that your camera can be used in the same way by converting one of the other buttons on the rear of your camera to perform the same task. More about how to do this later…

To get started, you need to just first make sure your camera has right autofocus set up for continuous shooting. On pro cameras or older DSLR’s, make sure your camera is in “C” mode, or “Continuous Servo AF Mode” to give it the full title. This is done by a rocker switch on the side of the camera near the lens release button;

With the current generation of cameras, however, it has become a little more complex to perform this task. Instead of the options seen above, this same rocker switch will have two options “AF” and “M”. In all cases, “M” stands for manual focus but the “AF” option by default puts your camera in “Auto Area AF Mode {AF-A)” where the camera selects “Continuous Servo AF Mode” automatically if it detects that the subject you are trying to focus on is moving. This is fine for normal casual candid shooting but it unfortunately also puts your camera in charge of choosing what part of the scene to focus on in the first place. For action photography, you need to be able to select your focus point manually but still be in a position to exploit the full power of the autofocus system. The best way to do this is by selecting “Dynamic Area AF Mode”.

This is achieved in one of three ways;

With some cameras you will have to go into the Custom Menu or the Set-up Menu and make the choice there. On Pro cameras, there is a rocker switch with three symbols – the middle of which is for “Dynamic Area AF Mode”. With the most recent cameras, a third method that involves pressing the “AF Mode” button (on the side of the camera) and rotating the Sub-command (front) dial needs to be employed.
To understand how to master the “back button” professional autofocus technique, we will start by looking at a sequence of shots made using the shutter release to initiate AF in the normal way. Our camera is now in “Continuous AF” mode and “Dynamic Area AF” has been selected from the “AF-area Mode” options.

In the example above, we can see that an AF point off to the right side of the viewfinder has been selected. Depending upon the camera model you are using, when the camera achieves focus the AF point may light-up red or turn black. This is called “Lock on” and when shooting a moving subject, the camera will register both the subject distance and the direction it is traveling. In Dynamic Area AF mode, the camera will use this info to do “Predictive Focus Tracking” which means it anticipates where the subject is going to be and the new focus point will be selected automatically. Confirmation that the subject is locked in focus will also be given by a small green dot lighting up within the viewfinder.

As we move through the shots, pressing and releasing the shutter one frame at a time, there comes a moment as we can see in the third frame where the boy has moved away from coverage by the chosen AF point. Pressing the shutter release at this point will cause the AF mechanism to attempt to re-focus on the subject behind the red focus point and….

The result is pretty catastrophic – the AF mechanism tries to focus on the part of the scene where the chosen AF point is. Our running boy is no longer in focus.

However, most people would not follow a subject in this way taking one shot at a time. Instead, it is more likely that you would shoot in a continuous burst using either CL or CH shooting mode, with the shutter fully depressed throughout the sequence. In this mode, the camera’s AF mechanism would have locked on the subject and followed the boy using “Focus Tracking” , calling into play other AF points that cover the boy as he moves.

The AF points indicated in yellow in the illustration above are some of the ones used by the camera to check on the subject’s distance and in turn to provide instruction to the lens as to the new focus point. Please note; these points do not actually illuminate when they become active. Although autofocus is better when the camera is in continuous shooting mode, there is still potential for things to go wrong. For example, when shooting short bursts of three or four frames at a time and removing your finger from the shutter release button momentarily. The danger is that in these instances, autofocus can be lost. Restarting AF again by pressing the shutter release would, as in the single frame example above, give your camera a new instruction – and it would assume you want to focus on the AF point you originally selected.

To ensure that the subject remains in focus all through the sequence – even through the times when you are not taking pictures but just following the subject through the viewfinder – you need to keep autofocus working. You need it to perform focus tracking and continuously sending new instructions to the lens to keep up. To do this, you must separate the functions of releasing the shutter and initiating AF.  This is the primary reason for using the back button. Initiating AF by pressing and holding down the Back Button allows you to shoot either in Single frame or Continuous shooting modes without the risk of sudden re-focussing taking place. The camera is receiving ongoing instructions from you to maintain focus as long as you keep your finger on the AF-ON button. In this way, the full technical power of the AF mechanism is brought into play. Here’s how to make the back button work effectively on those models that have a dedicated AF-ON button. First, a Custom Menu option is selected;

The camera’s default setting will be indicated in yellow. Select “AF-ON only” and press “OK” and you will have separated the two functions. Now part depressing the shutter release will no longer activate AF. Only by pressing the back button (AF-ON) will the subject be brought into sharp focus and the AF mechanism start to track your subject through the sequence. It will continue doing this as long as you keep pressing the button and the subject remains within the viewfinder AF frame area.

For those cameras like the Nikon D80/90, D3000, D5000 and D7000 that do not have a dedicated “AF-ON” button, it is still possible to separate the two functions and use one of the other back buttons to initiate AF.

Where there is only one, it is most likely to be the “AE-L/AF-L “ button which locks Auto Exposure (AE-L) and Auto Focus (AF-L). In your camera’s Custom Menu you will have an option under the section “f: Controls” (in some camera’s it is in the ‘Setup Menu: Buttons’ ). Here you will find the option to “Assign AE-L/AF-L Button” to “AF-ON”. Selecting this option will provide the same functionality as the purpose-designed AF-ON button found on professional camera models.

Putting this technique into practice can be a little difficult at first but if you persevere, it will pay dividends and improve your sports, wildlife or any kind of action photography. However, using the back button for static shots like portraits or landscapes can seem unnecessary, if not a little awkward, as it requires you to use two digits instead of one and think AF first and release second. But many pro shooters use it for all their photography because taking your finger off the back button will now lock the focus point. Normally, this requires you to press the AE-L /AF-L button. This is handy for preventing unwanted re-focussing and is especially useful when using telephoto lenses without a tripod.

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 18th October 2011 – Canon today announces the arrival of the EOS-1D X – its next generation professional Digital SLR (DSLR). Offering an unparalleled combination of speed, resolution and image quality, the EOS-1D X is the ultimate camera for capturing stunning images and Full HD movies. Whether shooting in the studio, the sports field, or anywhere in between, this model is ideal for virtually any professional photographer. The new model launches as the flagship in Canon’s DSLR line up – marking the 10th generation of Canon’s professional system with the most advanced EOS model ever produced.

The culmination of 40 years’ experience in developing professional cameras, the EOS-1D X represents a new era for the EOS system and supersedes both the EOS-1D Mark IV and the EOS-1Ds Mark III . Combining a new 18.1MP full-frame sensor, a redesigned autofocus (AF) system and powerful new metering technology with new dual “ DIGIC 5+ ” processors, this camera has been designed to offer unparalleled usability and image quality – ensuring any scene is captured with greater accuracy and speed than ever before.

“The EOS-1D X is the ultimate camera for all types of photographer” said Kieran Magee, Professional Marketing Director, Canon Europe. “Professionals often shoot in fast-paced, high pressure situations, and the EOS-1D X provides the features and performance they need. We’ve carefully listened to the needs of professionals and created a versatile, powerful camera that will meet the requirements of more photographers than ever before.”

   Setting new standards
The EOS-1D X offers a comprehensively-upgraded specification that’s packed with new technologies. A newly-developed full-frame 18.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor offers exceptional flexibility, allowing photographers to shoot a wider range of scenes and subjects in high resolution. Redesigned architecture offers an incredible ISO range of 100-51200, expandable up to 204800, while dual “DIGIC 5+” processors offer a 2-stop improvement in noise performance – making it easier to capture outstanding quality, low noise images, even in extreme low-light conditions.

The new 61-point wide-area autofocus system offers even greater sensitivity, delivering increased precision and speed. With 41 cross-type points, including five dual cross-type points, the camera’s AF system offers unsurpassed accuracy across the frame, while new AF pre-sets are specifically designed for shooting common challenging subjects – providing exceptional reliability in notoriously difficult shooting situations.

The EOS-1D X also features a newly-designed RGB metering system, providing incredible levels of accuracy. A 100,000 pixel RGB metering sensor is linked to the AF system and powered by its own dedicated DIGIC 4 processor, detecting faces and colour to ensure correct exposure levels and improved AF tracking, even when shooting the most challenging of scenes.

   Extreme power
Powered by next-generation processing technology, the EOS-1D X is the first-ever camera to feature dual “DIGIC 5+” processors. Offering performance up to three times faster than standard DIGIC 5, each processor is designed to manage huge levels of image data while simultaneously reducing image noise. In combination with the sensor’s 16-channel read-out, the dual processors enable full-resolution continuous shooting up to 12fps with 14-bit A/D conversion and full camera operation – the fastest of any DSLR currently available [1] . A super high-speed mode extends the shooting speed to 14fps [2] , while a new shutter and mirror mechanism reduces shutter lag and mirror bounce, delivering consistently high performance when shooting at high speed.

   The film-maker’s DSLR
The EOS-1D X is ideal for all professionals who want to exploit the EOS system’s extensive selection of lenses and accessories – whether shooting stills or HD movies. Users can record Full HD (1920x1080p) movies from the full-frame sensor with a full range of manual settings to control exposure, focus and frame rate [3] , while sound levels can also be displayed and adjusted on the LCD screen, ensuring complete control over every aspect of a shoot.

Thanks to the power provided by the dual “DIGIC 5+” processors moiré artefacts are also reduced, while EOS Movie now offers longer recording options, automatically creating a new file once the 4GB file limit has been reached. A new intra frame video codec also maintains the highest possible video quality, limiting compression of image data so users retain increased levels of information for post-production editing.

   Designed for professionals
The EOS-1D X offers a carefully revised version of the classic EOS-1 series design, with larger, more tactile buttons that make it easier for users to control settings – even in extreme conditions where gloves are required. Two multi-controllers and a touch-sensitive control wheel, for use in movie mode, make it easier to change settings, while a range of customisable function buttons allow users to set-up the camera to suit their individual needs by allowing shortcuts to the features and pre-sets they use most.

A 100% viewfinder makes framing each scene easy, while intelligent viewfinder functionality instantly adds a grid display when required. A large, 8.11cm (3.2”) Clear View II LCD screen offers a 1040k-dot resolution, and the anti-reflective structure prevents light reflections or glare when viewing images in bright conditions. A hardened glass cover also provides resistance to knocks and scratches commonly picked up while shooting on the move.

The menu system also features a comprehensively redesigned user interface, incorporating Help functions to make camera operation faster, clearer and easier. Additionally, a new dedicated AF tab allows photographers to access and customise AF pre-sets for common shooting situations or subjects, allowing users to concentrate on capturing the moment without the need to constantly adjust camera settings.

   Built to last
The EOS-1D X offers a highly durable body constructed from high-grade magnesium alloy that provides protection against both the elements and the knocks of everyday use. The latest implementation of Canon’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System also uses technology adopted from Canon lenses, using wave-based vibrations similar to that of Ultrasonic Motors to shake dust and dirt from the sensor even more effectively.

An enhanced shutter mechanism also provides extended durability, providing 400K shutter cycles so photographers can rely on their camera to meet the challenge of repeated, demanding shoots. The EOS-1D X also features Canon’s protective sealing around the controls and cover seams, making the camera dust and water-resistant when combined with Canon’s range of weather-resistant EF lenses – perfect for shooting in a range of weather conditions.

Enhanced connectivity also ensures photographers can send images to picture desks or studios quickly and securely. An integrated gigabit ethernet port provides a fast, reliable way to transfer images from on-location events or in a studio, without the need for an adaptor.

The EOS System – unrestricted creativity
As part of the award-winning EOS System, the EOS-1D X is compatible with the world’s largest selection of lenses, Speedlite EX flash units and an extensive range of accessories. The ideal upgrade for existing EOS-1D Mark IV and EOS-1Ds Mark III users, it’s also compatible with numerous EOS accessories, allowing the new body to seamlessly join any existing EOS-1 series kitbag.

In addition, launching alongside the EOS-1D X is the new WFT-E6 – a new, compact WiFi transmitter designed for transferring images when a wired connection isn’t available. Supporting the 802.11n WiFi standard and offering Bluetooth support for connectivity to external GPS devices, the WFT-E6 offers secure transfer of images and video to an FTP server, or the ability to display content on a compatible screen over a DLNA [4] connection.

The EOS-1D X will also be compatible with a new GPS receiver – the GP-E1. Enabling users to add location information to EXIF data and geographically track the progress of travelling shoot, the GP-E1 is particularly useful for wildlife or location-based photographers who may need to record the location of a scene for future reference.

Nikon UK, 15 September 2010 – Nikon today is pleased to announce a new Speedlight – the SB-700 . Packed with features, this is an easy-to-use, yet sophisticated flash in a compact body. It will be a welcome addition to anyone looking to develop their lighting skills and explore the options of the Nikon Creative Lighting system.

Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager Lenses, Accessories and Software, Nikon Europe BV says: “SB-700 offers users the opportunity to expand their creative potential beyond the built-in camera flash. It integrates flawlessly with Nikon’s DSLR cameras, taking advantage of i-TTL to provide optimal results with minimum of effort.”

Inheriting the advanced features of the professional SB-900 flash, the new flash also boasts an intuitive interface and easy-to-understand operating system. It features Nikon’s i-TTL, through-the-lens metering system, ensuring accurate light measuring as well as multi-step auto zoom, which automatically detects the lens focal length and adjusts the flash output accordingly for angles of view from 24mm to 120mm.

Users have the choice of three illumination patterns, which can be quickly selected to match different shooting scenarios. The high performance Speedlight is ideal for a wide range of applications, from portrait and studio to events and night-time photography.

Built for versatility

The SB-700 is compatible with FX and DX cameras and its fast wireless control will make the flash attractive for a wide range of customers, including advanced photographers seeking to extend their Creative Lighting System. It can act as a master, controlling up to two groups of flashes and their light ratios, and can also act as a remote unit in a flash set up.

With its rotating head and built-in bounce card, the photographer can use the flash to direct the light and bounce it off ceilings or walls. The SB-700 also comes with the practical Nikon Diffusion Dome to soften the light and even the shadows of direct flash.

The flash has a mounting foot lock lever, through which the flash can be securely attached to the camera, preventing it from coming loose. There is also an optional weather-sealed mount available for outdoor photography.

Major features:

• The new, improved LCD panel interface and an intuitive layout of switches make it quick and easy to set the features.

• With a maximum guide number of 38 (for an FX camera, at the standard illumination setting at ISO 100 at 120mm) the flash is powerful and versatile to suit most lighting conditions.

• The multi-step power zoom automatically responds to the current focal length of the lens attached to the camera and covers angles of view, ranging from 24mm to 120mm.

• Three illumination patterns can quickly be selected to match each shooting situation, making it the ideal flash for a range of scenarios. The Centre-weighted pattern offers more power and higher guide number which highlights the subject from its surroundings. The Even setting works well for indoor group shots or a flat surface whilst the Standard setting has a slight emphasis on the centre.

• The high-speed recycling time is only approximately 2.5 seconds with NiMH batteries and alkaline batteries and approximately 3.5 seconds with lithium batteries.

• The quick wireless control mode allows the user to change the light ratios of A and B group Speedlight units and can also act as a remote unit in the Nikon Creative Lighting System.

• The SB-700 automatically detects flash head heat and delays the recycling time if the temperature of the flash head rises, protecting the flash from heat damage.

• The firmware of the flash can easily be updated through Nikon DSLR cameras.

• The SB-700 comes with fluorescent and incandescent hard, plastic-type colour filters, which are more durable, heat-resistant and easier to use than the conventional film-type filters. The flash automatically detects these two hard-type colour filters and instructs the camera to set the optimum colour temperature. The optional colour filter set SJ-4 is also available.

Nikon UK, 15 September, 2010 – Nikon launches the D7000 , a D-SLR that offers exceptional image quality, reliability and performance packed into a durable and portable body.

Jordi Brinkman, Product Manager for Nikon Europe, says: “The exciting new D7000 is the ideal next camera for D-SLR owners who want to further indulge their passion for photography with a camera that boasts more advanced features providing creative power. It has a new image sensor, EXPEED 2, AF system and metering sensor to ensure great performance in a highly durable body. In fact, it has everything you need in your next SLR but in a size you wouldn’t expect.”

   Exceptional image quality

The D7000 includes a range of new features to ensure superior image quality including 16.2 effective megapixels with the newly developed Nikon DX format CMOS image sensor. The camera boasts a new image-processing engine, EXPEED 2, which delivers higher image quality, higher speed processing and multiple functions with more power. And the D7000’s increased ISO sensitivity (100-6400, extendable up to 25600) ensures exceptional detail with minimal noise when capturing fast moving subjects or in poor light situations, even without the flash.

Outstanding reliability

The D7000’s bright Glass Pentaprism Viewfinder with approximate 100% frame coverage and 0.94x magnification gives you the most precise view and focus of any scene, and it is always ready when you are with a shutter speed of 1/8000s, tested to 150,000 cycles. What is more, the camera is protected by magnesium alloy top and rear covers and has durable sealing against dust and moisture so it is prepared for even the most testing of situations.

When it comes to storage, the D7000 again provides you with maximum reliability. The twin SD memory card slots allow for added storage capacity and give you the freedom to manage your images and video in the way you want to either by saving more of them, keeping different formats separate or always having backup space when you need it.

Enhanced performance

The D7000’s newly developed AF system featuring 39 focus points, including 9 cross-type sensors in the centre, gives you the sharpest focus, no matter where your subject is in the frame. And with Nikon’s new 2,016 pixel RGB metering sensor to enhance the effectiveness of the Scene Recognition System, plus High Speed Continuous shooting capability at 6FPS, you can be sure to capture incredibly accurate, high-quality images every time.

Full-HD D-Movie with AF-F mode

The D7000 has direct access to a movie record button so you can capture footage in full HD (1080p) with greater ease. The AF-F gives continuous focus during movie recording, which is captured using MPEG4 AVC/H.264 compression, and has a stereo microphone jack for quality sound recording. This means superior image quality and operability when using the D-Movie function.

The D7000s built-in movie editing functions also give you the freedom to chose the start and end points of your footage and switch to selected frames for capturing still images without relying on a computer – letting you edit and share your films quickly and easily.

Optional accessories

Nikon is also launching the new Speedlight SB-700, a feature-packed yet easy-to-use flash unit. The SB-700 offers lighting benefits that greatly surpass the camera’s onboard flash, allowing total control over scene or subject lighting to create beautiful, professional looking results.

To guarantee great performance for longer, the D7000 also has a dedicated Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D11 (optional) that enables seamless switching of power supply with the in-camera battery, vertical shooting and further stabilizes the body when using a long telephoto lens.

The D7000 is compatible with the GP-1 GPS (Global Positioning System) unit which records location information in the image file and of course, the camera supports a wide variety of NIKKOR lenses.

I’ve had quite a few emails regarding the Nikon D300s. Here is a little bit about the camera and also a video from our friends at B&H, New York. 8 years ago when my wife & I started SF Digital, our first purchase for the business was the Nikon D100. We had two bodies and each did around 150,000 clicks without the shutter going down!!! We were photographing Events, mainly Equestrian sports like Show Jumping, Dressage, Cross Country, Mounted Games, Pony Clubs and so on.

I loved the D100. It was a superb camera and the whole digital revolution was starting and since then the advances in technology & software has given us the Nikon D300s. This is I would say one of the best DX format Nikon cameras around at the moment.

The D300S is a compact DX format professional SLR that extends the options for photographers who value creative flexibility. Incorporates Nikon’s D-movie with in-camera editing function into a discrete body, letting you switch quickly between capturing superior stills or movie clips in stereo* sound. It boasts a highly sensitive 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and supports a phenomenal 7fps continuous shooting. CF and SD card slots enhance workflow flexibility, letting you capture stills on one card and movies on another. Nikon’s acclaimed 51-point AF system offers broad coverage and high sensitivity in low light. Selectable Picture Controls streamline post-production, and the high definition 3-inch LCD screen supports D-movie and two Live View modes. Protected by a tough, yet light, environmentally-sealed magnesium alloy body, the D300S will change the way you approach the craft of photography.

This is now Nikon’s flagship DX-format camera body and delivers an exceptional degree of power from a agile body. The D300S’s Multi CAM 3500DX AF sensor module offers an exceptionally wide area of AF coverage. With 51 points strategically positioned across the frame.

One of the most interesting features is the Scene Recognition System using the precise colour and brightness information from the 1,005-pixel RGB sensor. Scene Recognition System pushes the accuracy levels for autofocus, auto exposure, i-TTL flash control and auto white balance to an unprecedented high. In playback mode, the Face Detection System lets you instantly zoom in on a human face in the LCD monitor.

Video on a DSLR

I’ve written about the video on a dslr before on here . With the D300s you enter a whole new dimension of creativity. You can create HD quality (1,280 x 720 pixels) at 24fps movie. You can also attach an external microphone through the mic terminal. A good quality microphone like the Rode VideoMic Directional Stereo Microphone is a professional grade shotgun microphone and sits neatly and safely on the hot shoe.

The sensitivity of the internal and the external microphone can be adjusted to low, medium, high or auto sensitivity level.

Select low for sensitivity in loud & noisy environments and high for quieter environments.

An external microphone also allows you to distance it from any sound generated by the camera – such as the lens movement during autofocus shooting.

The D-Movie function has undergone various improvements since its launch in 2008 and now comes with an external microphone terminal for clear stereo recordings that add an exciting new element to your movies.

Another way to enhance the dramatic impact of your movies, far beyond the reach of ordinary camcorders, is with the unrivaled line up of NIKKOR lenses – from ultra wide to fisheye to super-telephoto.

There are two modes for the video:

   Tripod Mode

Gives you control over the depth of field with a selectable aperture of up to f/16 (in A & M modes).

   Hand-held Mode

The D300s can automatically adjust the aperture setting to match changes in the brightness of your scene.

The dual card slots for Compact Flash & SD memory cards is a ‘must-have’ in any pro camera body. Gives so much peace of mind knowing that your images / movies are being backed up in-camera instantly. With more movies shot, the card capacity is getting bigger and I don’t have any problems shooting with a 8GB or bigger CF card.

The battery will give you approx 950 shots depending on how much you use the superb 920k-dot LCD screen for playback function and also video. Using the MB-D10 Multi Power Battery Pack increases the shooting to up to a phenominal 2,950 shots per charge and enables high-speed continuous shooting at a rate of approx 8 frames per second.

For the flash, I would recommend the Nikon SB900 Speedlight . Event though the D300s comes with a pop-up flash, you just can’t beat the SB900. One great little feature of the built-in pop up flash is the ability to trigger wirelessly any SB600/800/900 flashguns as a remote. The built-in Commander Mode for the flash allows you to control up to 2 groups of flashguns.

This is a superb DX-format 12.3 megapixel camera body with approx. 100% viewfinder frame coverage. If I wasn’t using the FX format D series Nikons. I would certainly be using the D300s.
