” A huge thank you to Oz, Kevin & Martin for a great workshop! As always, I came away with lots of inspiration and ideas.
“Hi Guys just wanted to say a huge thank you for a fantastic weekend, the course was not only informative but great fun with plenty of great ideas.
“Thanks to Martin, Oz and Kevin for a super weekend at the ‘Masters of Light’ Workshop. It was invaluable as a newbie to gain such insight from 3 top professionals. The fact that they all have different styles and approaches made the Workshop even more worthwhile. I am thinking a lot about light, and composure now. My website and marketing are going to get a kick up the backside, and I also met some Fab people. Thanks again. See you soon.”
Sara Beaumont Photography

“I would like to thank Oz, Martin & Kevin for a truly excellent ‘Masters of light’ workshop at Royal Leamington Spa this weekend. It was packed full of useful information covering many key areas of photography and running your own business and the price was well worth it. I would challenge anyone to find a better value for money course of this calibre and would recommend it to any photographer wishing to improve or hone there skills. The quality and knowledge of the instructors who are genuinely passionate about photography and helping others to get it right. Here’s to more course like these, thank again guys it was truly inspirational. Best regards”
Blue Ice Photography

“Thank you so much Martin, Kevin and Oz, a fantastic weekend crammed with ideas, inspiration and enthusiasm. My head is still spinning with the shear volume of knowledge and information that it had to cope with! All 3 trainers are experts in their own fields, but what really came across was how each one was so helpful and approachable, you could tell they all got a real buzz from passing on their wealth of experience. The whole event went very well and was superbly organised, I could tell there was a huge amount of preparation that went into this. Well done guys”
Norman Rubenis Photography

“I’d just like to thank Oz, Martin & Kevin for the excellent ‘Masters of light’ workshop this weekend. Full of useful information at an amazingly low price. It would be hard to find better value for money training anywhere. Quite often you find that those people running such courses are full of their own self-importance. It made a refreshing change to attend a course where the instructors were so knowledgeable, so helpful and so approachable. Other courses that I’ve attended could sometimes feel like they were being padded to make them fill the allotted time. Not this one! It is quite incredible the amount of content that was squeezed into just two days. The course was informative, useful, exhaustive and fun! I will definitely keep my eye out for more.”
Simon Coates Photography

As a business, Uzair and I regularly speak to many photographers, both formally and informally, in public arenas as well as personal 1-2-1s, and photographers’ theories as to why they shoot a particular way is always fascinating. However, my personal pet hate is hearing about what I call the ‘machine gun merchants’. These are the guys (and girls) who think that they will turn up at a wedding and literally keep blasting away with their camera, to the point that their coverage is virtually continuous. (This may come as a surprise, but that’s what video is for).
So why have they adopted this style? Some have convinced themselves that because a couple has told them they want “a natural, relaxed coverage without any posed shots” that they have now got to cover every conceivable combination for the couple; after all they can’t rely on any staged shots – but we will come back to that later.

Then of course there are those that have heard some hot-shot photographer’s spin as to the huge money-making packages they book, and in their hope that some of that financial success may rub off, they try to imitate their chosen hero photographer. These photographers don’t actually have the skill or talent to imitate so they go for quantity, hoping that one shot may just capture a passable shot.

Finally there is the third category which is almost guaranteed to financial failure – they love to sit and post-process for days on end, giving themselves a high-five after yet another image has been over Photoshop’ed. A great way to make yourself a very busy fool. This photographer has lost all sight of the commercial acceptance of their images by their client.

Let’s get back to the photographer that has been asked to create ‘relaxed, natural, informal’ shots. Every wedding photographer is told this by 99% of couples when meeting up for their consultation. After a decade I have yet to meet a couple that said they would love to see wooden, cardboard cut-out photos with everyone looking miserable, lamp-posts growing out of heads and the photographer taking well over an hour to do group shots. You can be selective about the shots you take without losing any of the spontaneity. By thinking about your shot before clicking the shutter, you will create better work, where every shot counts. You will learn to anticipate a moment unfolding before you. You will be able to correctly compose and expose your shot, eliminating a lot of the post-processing work. Just because a client says they say do not want posed shots does not mean that you cannot direct your shots, however subtle that may be on the day. Most photographers are frightened to take posed photos because they have never actually trained in this invaluable skill. You may well develop your own style of posing your subject with experience, but if you are fairly new to wedding photography then specifically training in this area is as important as knowing which lens to use.

And what about the imitators? Surely you started your business because of your own creativity as a photographer? Being inspired by other people’s work in any field is part of a creative process, but blatantly trying to imitate another person’s photographic style is a little like a drunken karaoke night – definitely never going to be the original singer or song and totally worthless when you sober up. Use your inspiration to develop your own signature style that you can be proud of. Think about what makes your style different to your competition and identify your USP. Ultimately this will lead to your financial success, regardless of the current economic climate. Don’t be afraid to explore your weaknesses as a photographer and again by targeting specific areas for training and learning from the experts may just help you create your unique identity.

Finally, we come to the post-processing addicts. By training yourself to take better photos you will automatically reduce your workload as you will no longer have to sit and cull numerously excessive and repetitive shots. If you’ve taken a short burst of shots to capture a particular sequence of events or an emotional reaction, don’t get lazy and just present everything to your client – either be exceptionally ruthless and leave a very selective 2-3 shots or image/s that capture the essence of the story you are telling, or don’t shoot them in the first place. All the images will never end up in the album and the client will never know about the other shots existing because they haven’t seen them! Inevitably there will be the odd image that needs to be corrected for some reason, but if you are editing the classic ‘lamp post from head’ it’s nothing to be proud of your ability to clone; either learn to compose your shots better when shooting or if certain elements are truly unavoidable on the day learn to compose your shots so that you can crop efficiently without extensive retouching,

To finish this post, I would like to say 2 things:

– think before you click
– get the image right ‘in-camera’

Hope this helped you and please feel free to leave your comment here or on our Facebook fan page.

Engagement Photography

Engagement photography is the easiest way to showcase your talent, your creativity and your brand in front of your potential clients. E-sessions are a perfect way to have high conversion rates from leads into bookings. There is a simple process to it. If followed, you will achieve amazing conversions like you never did before.

Off-camera flash at Weddings

Crash, Oz & Jayce share with you their own individual styles and ways to use off-camera flash creatively and effectively to shoot incredible images in all kinds of conditions. You’ll see images shot in extreme conditions and temperatures with minimal equipment, learn how to balance flash with available ambient light, whether to use flash as a main or a fill light, the lighting kit which requires minimal set-up and is very portable, infra-red v radio triggers and much much more.
How not to forget key shots at a Wedding

Work flow, editing & post-processing

Wedding photography is all about work flow. Shooting, editing & post-processing. The work flow dictates whether you make a profit or a loss on a wedding. Take too long in front of the computer and all your profits will drain away. Are you confused whether to shoot 500 images or 2000 + images at a wedding, well you’re not alone on this. So many photographers take unnecessarily high number of images which pretty much locks them in front of the computer for a week! You’ll see 3 different shooting, editing & post-processing work flows by each one of us using Lightroom 3 & Aperture 3.

How to set your website for Google

Vast majority of photographers have set up their websites & blogs which do NOT tick all the boxes for Google. Secondly and most importantly, they don’t know what keyword research is all about. In this webinar, you’ll learn some amazingly simple tips on how to turbo charge your website & blog for higher rankings, how to beat your competitors in search rankings and how to promote your website for free.

This webinar series will get you started on making your wedding photography profitable and giving you the confidence to compete with the best. With no travelling costs, hotels to book or even to take time off work, this is an opportunity you cannot afford to miss out on!

Yesterday I presented my photography seminar ‘Extreme Weddings’ at Apple’s flagship store in Regent Street. The seminar was all about how I photographed two weddings in extreme temperatures & climate. From the icy conditions in the Arctic Circle of -30ºC to the tropical & hot climate in Malaysia where the temperature was as high as 30ºC.

I enjoyed presenting to a very enthusiastic audience and it was a pleasure to be presenting here again. I’ll be back at the Apple Store, Regent Street in Feb 2011 for a fantastic new presentation.

Thanks to Apple for the invite and to Robin for the above image.

I had the pleasure of photographing Hari & Adam’s wedding in the gorgeous island of Kita Kinabalu, Malaysia. This island in the Borneo, Sabah region of E. Malaysia and is about 2.5 hours flight from Kuala Lumpur. The wedding consisted of a traditional Indian Ceremony at the temple followed by a reception at the fantastic Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa .

It was quite an early start of 6.00am for all of us as Hari was getting ready to be at the temple for 9.00am.

I started off with some bridal preparation shots of Hari getting ready, close up shots of the jewellery and some bridal & family portraits. The above shot was taken with the Nikon 105 VR with ambient light only. All you need is a reflective surface to get the reflections.

Then we were off to the Temple for the Indian Ceremony. Here is the groom being greeted and welcomed by the hosts.

The ceremony started and the bride is called after some 20 minutes in to the ceremony. The whole ceremony took about 45-50 mins, which isn’t too bad. I’ve attended ceremonies which have lasted more than 2 hours!

The bride than joins the ceremony. They were about 120 guests who attended the ceremony.

After the ceremony, I took some family / group shots of the.

We had the afternoon to recover as it was pretty hot.

The evening reception was held at the Grand Ball Room wtih over 400 guests attending the reception.

Before the arrival of the evening guests for the Reception, we went out around the gardens & the beach of the resort for some shots of the couple.

Here (below) I used a bit of off-camera flash. The Nikon SB900 was mounted on a lightstand and shot through an umbrella.

It really was a memorable experience for me. This place is just wonderful, the people are warm & friendly, food & drink to die for, the fantastic beaches and the little islands around here. Everything is just amazing.
